Franz Langoth commenced his political career in 1909 as a German nationalist member of the Upper Austrian "Landtag" (provincial parliament).
During the First Republic, he was the head of the of the "Großdeutsche Volkspartei" (Pan-German People's Party) in Upper Austria, for which racism and anti-Semitism represented a party programme.
Due to the steady decline in support for the party, in 1933 Langoth switched allegiance to the still more radical National Socialist ideology.
